Do you love your yard or garden, but feel like something’s missing?  Perhaps you have a gorgeous view but something feels a little plain.  This is a fairly common phenomenon for the DIY landscaper.  A quick remedy may be to simply add hedges, or flowering shrubs to your fence line.

The picture here shows tulips which are seasonal, but they look beautiful as a colorful low hedge when planted closely together.  You could use pots or planters, if you’re planning to change them out frequently or if you have a small fence to work with.  You could also look for something more permanent such as flowering shrubs to plant in the ground on either side of your fence.

We came across a few great examples in an article here that we think you should take a look at.  http://birdsandbloomsblog.com/2013/11/08/transform-a-bare-wallfence-with-flowering-shrubs/ Here are some of the benefits to using flowering shrubs against your fence or wall from the article linked above.

Benefits of Using Flowering Shrubs Along a Wall or Fence:

  1. Cost – Using the right plants, you can keep the cost relatively low.
  2. Birds – many flowering shrubs offer food, and therefore  a great habitat for birds.  If you’re looking to attract hummingbirds, this is a great way to get them to frequent your yard or garden.
  3. Adjustability – By using planters and pots you can easily adjust the look of your wall or fence for the season or just when you feel like a change!

Don’t underestimate how dramatically different your yard or garden can look by simply making use of your existing wall or fence.  Dress it up and give the local birds a place to frequent by using Pink Emu Bush, Azalea, Hydrangea, Rhododendron, or even Honeysuckle vines, all of which make a great screen to cover your bare wall or fence.
